Zoe Gawd | Safe
I did something a little different this week: I asked artists to submit their music to me. I received submissions via replies with links, DMs, and emails. I was surprised, honestly. And as promised, I listened through all of them. No surprises here; mixing quality was as expected, lackluster production, lazy lyricism. Then came a record that I previously saw as a video snippet. The song titled “Safe” comes from Queens-native Zoe Gawd. The beat comes in catchy with a hard-hitting kick and growling 808. The melody is simple; a truly infectious ear worm. I was rocking with the 29-second snippet, especially when she comes in flowing into the second verse. My favorite line here is, “I’m making moves/And none of em legal.” I’m normally put off by music made in this vein because it’s so common; the sound is accessible, easy to reproduce and normally the vocalist takes the backseat to the production but the roles are reversed here. Zoe is the focal point in this song. Compliments to her engineer. She has plenty of songs out that should get you up to speed and “Safe” is a [enter song title here] place to start.
